How To Use Your Business Lawyer

Business owners have a lot going on, and while legal help may cross their mind from time to time, I don’t think many business owners are using lawyers correctly. They could be proactively addressing legal issues and taking care of problems and potential problems before they become expensive and time consuming.

With that in mind, how should a business be using their business lawyer? There are a lot of ways, but here are some ideas to start with:

  1. You’re starting a business, whether it’s an LLC or Corporation, and you aren’t sure what documents you need in place.
  2. You have an existing business but aren’t sure if you have the proper documents or are managing your corporate formalities correctly.
  3. You have contracts that need to be reviewed and the need for a system in place to manage them that’s more efficient and cost effective.
  4. You recognize that you have general legal and risk questions that need to be addressed.
  5. A customer or client owes you money and you want to know how to get it.
  6. You’re having issues with a contract you entered into and aren’t sure what your options are going forward.
  7. You want to protect your company intellectual property, but aren’t even sure what it is, or how to actually protect it.
  8. You want to prevent legal and risk issues early on, or before they come up, but don’t exactly know what they are or how to address them.
  9. You want to bring on some independent contractors and need to know the process and how to manage them.
  10. You are hiring employees, aren’t sure of the steps and risks involved and want to cover all your bases.
  11. Your website needs disclaimers, terms and policies but you aren’t sure what to include.
  12. You’re concerned that your business has compliance issues, but aren’t sure where to look and what to do to be compliant with the necessary regulations.
  13. Your business is looking into possible marketing and advertising campaigns and wants to know the risks involved and any relevant regulations.
  14. You want company policies in place to govern employees and other things, but aren’t sure what the policies should be and how to put them in place.

Most of these questions or issues can be addressed up front before they cause any real issues. Taking care of legal questions and risk management in a proactive manner allows businesses to operate more efficiently while saving time and money.
